Education System in Indonesia

1.      What kind of language system do you have? Mostly, the medium language is Bahasa Indonesia or Indonesian Language, and sometimes using Javanese. But, some of International class in some university using English as a medium language.
2.      As in what are the compulsory languages that must be learnt in schools? Any additional language? The compulsory languages which have to learnt by students are local language and Bahasa Indonesia. Usually, since in forth year, student introduced to learn English. Some schools also introduce another language, like German, Deutsch, Japanese, and Arabic. So, at my forth until six year of primary school, I learned 4 languages as well. Not really learned all of the materials, but only the basic vocabulary, basic grammar, and basic conversations. Bur, the popular language use in Indonesia is local language, Bahasa Indonesia, and English
3.      Do most individuals go to university in your country? (Do you have figures or a percentage?) Not at all. The data and percentage are depending on the surveyor and the factors of comparison. There is a data said that only 7.2% of total population (255 million) in Indonesia who go to university (http://www.pikiran-rakyat.com/pendidikan/2012/05/12/188222/baru-72-persen-anak-bangsa-nikmati-bangku-kuliah). And in 2020, Indonesia will be best five for amount of Degree.
4.      How many universities are there? Depend on National Statistic survey, there are 4.350 universities in Indonesia, 370 are government universities, and 4.043 private universities.
5.      What are the top universities in your country? From Lembaga Pemeringkat Perguruan Tinggi Dunia Quacquarelli Symonds (http://www.qs.com) at the end of 2016
a.       Universitas Indonesia (Ranking in Asia 2016= 67)
b.      Institut Teknologi Bandung (Ranking in Asia 2016= 86)
c.       Universitas Gadjah Mada (Jogjakarta) (Ranking in Asia 2016= 105)
d.      Universitas Airlangga (Surabaya) (Ranking in Asia 2016= 190)
e.       Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB) (Ranking Asia in 2016= 191)
6.      Is it competitive to enter? Yeah, of course. We have to choose a major which fit with us early.
In the first national selection step, the government give 3 choices of preference to everyone by marks in Senior High School. The people who accepted, they are in lucky and they have been a student there.
In the second national selection step, the government also give 3 choices of preference by test. The people who accepted, they have been a student there.
And the last section is the selection by each university. The rule and requirements are depending on the university itself.
We also have “passing grade” to see how is the competition for each major. It based on how many students registered and how many students accepted. So, based on passing grade, we know how many competitor and difficultness to enter each major.
7.      From your observations. What are the top 3 jobs that individuals in your country would want to do? Continue to master and doctoral, or taking and looking for job
8.      What is the most desirable job that graduates want to persue? There are civil services, bank employee, and professional (teacher, lecturer, lawyer, doctor, etc)
9.      What are the educational issues and challenges in your home country? The quality of student in university are still low, they have to be better either theoretical, practical, and also skill. The publication and research should be increase, because the amount of scientific paper are limited. This happen to either lecturer and students
More or less, there is something wrong with the education system in Indonesia. But, in the more important thing that we should concern is how we, as youth of Indonesia can increase our capability, skill, knowledge, and face the global competition for all the aspect.
